szewai
Besides teaching ballroom and Latin dances, Szewai is a an independent choreographer whose goal is to make dance performances more accessible to the general public by incorporating common language to help ease new audiences into physically and emotionally charged work. By fusing traditional and non-traditional dance movement, improvisation, pedestrian movement with the incorporation of spoken word, music, vidoes, sets and props, Szewai's works are physically stimulating and emotionally satisfying. In 2008, she received a choreographic residency at Links Hall (LinkUp) to present a new work that explores various forms of prejudice . Her choreography has also been presented at the Around the Coyote Festival, The Dance Center of Columbia, and M.C. Squared Dance Company. Recently, she received a grant from CAAP (Community Arts Assistance Program) to develop a collaborative project, "Portable Dance project," which explores community dance and interactive performance.
Currently, she is investigating a dance theater work that is inspired by Alan Lightman's Einstein's Dreams, a collage of fictional stories about worlds with differing experiences and interpretations of time. This work will be developed into a full-evening performance that combines movement, spoken word, set and props to tell stories about facing the inevitable changes in life and recalls how we deal with loss, accept the unexpected and capture drifting moments in time.
